Matthew Hancock, MP for West Suffolk, has taken part in Apprenticeship Week by visiting the British Racing School (BRS) in his constituency town of Newmarket, the international home of horseracing.
Matthew met the BRS management team and a number of the School’s apprentices before being given the opportunity to ride flat out up the straight gallop and try the School’s simulator.
Apprenticeship week is part of a wider drive by the Government that has seen major funding to increase participation in Apprenticeships. Apprenticeships teach young people valuable skills, self confidence and help them to go on to find permanent employment. This has resulted in a 58% increase in take-up across West Suffolk and a similar increase across England as a whole.
Matthew said: “The rapid expansion of apprenticeships in West Suffolk, and across the country, is great news for young people and employers alike. There has been an almost 60% increase in Suffolk, which means an extra 270 young people earning and learning; something we can all welcome.
“The British Racing School is a superb place for apprentices, who work exceptionally hard, both contributing and gaining a great deal. Getting to join in and train on Our Vic, a horse that has beaten Kauto Star no less, was a real thrill.”
