Securing A Better Future For Horseracing and Newmarket

Racing Right - I have long argued that Racing Right, which replaces the horseracing levy, is vital to putting the finances of Britain’s second most popular sport on a sustainable footing, and now we will have it.

Development at Hatchfield Farm – I have consistently opposed development at Hatchfield Farm — we need to preserve the town’s historic and unique identity as the home of British Racing. With the recent refusal for planning by the Secretary of State, we must now work together to come up with a plan that builds on Newmarket's strengths that the whole community can support.

Securing Better Education

I’ve worked hard over many years to support all schools in West Suffolk. I applaud the success of the Samuel Ward Academy which has been graded Outstanding in its two most recent Ofsted inspections, thus paving the way for the Samuel Ward Academy Trust to join forces with Castle Manor Academy to ensure the same excellent standards in education across Haverhill.

In the north of West Suffolk, I have backed Ixworth and Breckland free schools – both schools are supported by excellent staff and committed parents.

Securing Better Transport

A11 Fiveways: I have worked hard to address the safety concerns at the A11 Fiveways roundabout. New road markings have been painted and signage has been installed and there will be an investigation and analysis as to how to further improve safety by means of traffic light signaling.

Newmarket Railway: I have conducted a survey amongst Newmarket residents to find out what improvements they would like to see at Newmarket Railway. Over 400 replies were received and the findings of the survey have been presented to the Department of Transport. During the summer, Abellio was named the preferred bidder of the new East Anglia rail franchise. They have pledged to increase the number of morning seats by 55%, which was the number one ask from my Newmarket constituents who responded to my survey.

A1307: I have pushed for the dualling of the A1307 and the campaign to do so was launched in October 2015. It is consistently raised with me as one of the biggest issues for the town. The issue of the A1307 has been raised with the Minister of State at the Department for Transport and a funded report on traffic flows on the A1307 as been asked for.

Securing Better Broadband

We have put forward the legal right to high speed broadband for all in the Queen’s Speech, and the Digital Economy Bill will now be debated in the House of Lords after it passed its third reading in the House of Commons unopposed. The Bill will create a legal right to minimum internet download speeds for customers and will provide compensation to customers if service requirements are not met. Fast broadband is no longer an option but a standard utility for most people and I will continue to push for a 21st century broadband connection that families, communities and businesses in West Suffolk can benefit from.
